Thumbnail Sketch: Paris Trends

Out and About in Paris

Loving this time to develop skills as a 'flaneur'... wandering the streets with little purpose other than to observe and be part of the world around.  Katherine and I let our noses lead us (and sometimes our stomachs).
Here are a few trends we notice .

The F.G.U.
Translates to French Girl Uniform...also works for French Guys
Every year there are a couple that emerge.  This year it is the little leather jacket (the thin leather blazer is popular this year), paired with jeans and little boots.
Has me seeking a leather jacket.....no luck so far, may just have to go home and make one!

The American Southwest...influences all over the place, and the short cowgirl boot is a big hit.
Skulls are everywhere.  Still.  Go figure....

LOVE this color....called 'bleu canard', duck blue.  Mixes well with brown, black, gray.

Little Collars
Here, demure cotton attached to a knit cardigan (and VERY expensive).

Fur....this a cozy alternative to a scarf, would be great on a plain round neck pullover or...

As a necklace....

 Oddball Details
VERY expensive, a jacket with hand sewn in sleeve, stitched together collar, lots of buttons, check out the buttonhole placement.  I am seeing re-vamping potential here.

Clever sleeve.  (I cannot figure this one out).   Yet.

Clever sleeve attaches to this simple little shift.

Mixing it up:  combining offbeat prints and textures.
This next series of photos from Printemps, one of the grand department stores where we spent the afternoon with our friend Martine, who had come in for the day to shop.  We followed her around and had a great time seeing things through her eyes.  They did not seem to mind taking photos.

Fun spin on the motorcycle jacket as vest, interpreted in fuzzy mohair.

More mohair....the American Hero jacket is chic for men and women.

More mohair plus a print T plus leather jeans.
Menswear scarves
From an upscale left bank men's store, a scarf with impeccable details from a tailored suit.

From a tiny men's wear shop in the Marais where the owner is always in the back sewing...he makes all the caps and scarves, this one pieced from menswear fabrics is a standout.
 Yikes Stripes!
Stripes are EVERYWHERE!

Bad Dress

Possibly the ugliest dress in Paris!

Toasting la vie en rose with tea at Merci, one of our favorite Paris shops.

  1. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy these posts. The mustard mohair moto vest/jacket is making me drool. The "bleu canard" is perfect with those browns and a faux fur collar is something to consider this winter.

  2. Marcy, could you give the name of the little men's wear shop in the Marais (with the pieced scarf)? I've been wanting to make one of these since I saw a similar scarf in a Denyse Schmidt quilt book. I'm hoping this Paris shop has a website I could look at for more inspiration! Thanks!

  3. Thank you so much. I see 2 or 3 ideas I am ready to incorporate right now for the winter. i.e. short western boots (I have a lot of turquoise from the 70's that I love wearing too.)

  5. Thanks for sharing the trends! I've been ready to make another leather jacket and have been pawing through my patterns for vest ideas. Seeing what you posted, I'm ready to dive in! I love the bleu canard too. Like chartreuse, it's so neutral.
